How To Whiten Crowns On Teeth?
Dr. Emrah YEŞİLYURT (Medical Director)
Dr. Emrah Yeşilyurt is the Founder of Avangart Clinic. He combines advanced dental expertise with a genuine commitment to helping patients feel comfortable and informed about their oral health journey.

If you have a crown and want a brighter smile, the most important thing to know is that crowns do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth. In my experience, many patients think the crown itself has “gone yellow,” but the real issue is often surface buildup, aging of the surrounding teeth, or a shade mismatch that becomes more obvious over time.
Materials such as porcelain, ceramic, and zirconia do not absorb whitening gel like natural teeth do. So in most cases, the better question is not “How do I whiten the crown?” but “Why does this crown look darker, duller, or different from the teeth around it?”
A very common example is this: someone whitens their natural teeth at home, then suddenly notices that one front crown stands out.
In most cases, the crown did not become darker. Instead, the natural teeth became lighter, and the old crown stayed the same shade. In other cases, the crown may only look dull because of plaque, tobacco, coffee, tea, or fine surface staining that can sometimes be improved with professional cleaning or polishing.
That is why I always assess the cause before recommending treatment. The safest next steps may include:
- removing surface stains with a professional clean.
- whitening the natural teeth around the crown.
- checking whether the crown material still looks healthy and glossy.
- Replacing an older crown if it no longer matches your smile.
- discussing safe teeth whitening treatments in Turkey for your natural teeth, not the crown itself.
If you have crowns, veneers, or both, the right solution depends on what is really causing the color difference. Before using whitening strips or strong bleaching gels, I would always advise you to consult a dentist at Avangart Dental Clinic in Turkey. A proper exam can show whether the issue is stain, wear, gum changes, or an older restoration that now needs to be refreshed for a more even smile.
What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a natural tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. I often explain it to patients as a protective outer shell that helps a damaged tooth work normally again.
I recommend a crown when:
- A tooth is weak and needs support
- A tooth is broken, cracked, or badly worn
- A large filling no longer provides enough strength
- A bridge needs support
- An implant needs a prosthetic tooth
Crowns can be made from stainless steel, metal alloys, porcelain-fused-to-metal, composite resin, ceramic, or porcelain. Each material has a different purpose. For example, porcelain and ceramic are often chosen for visible teeth because they blend in better, while metal-based options may offer extra strength in some cases.
| Material Type | Surface / Porosity Behavior | Color Change with Bleaching Gel | Stain Resistance | Recommended Care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Enamel | Semi-permeable | Whitens noticeably | Moderate | Professional or supervised whitening |
| Porcelain / Lithium Disilicate (e.max) | Low-porosity ceramic | Usually little to no visible whitening; possible small material-dependent changes | High | Professional cleaning or polishing; replace only if mismatch remains |
| Zirconia-Based Ceramic* | Very low porosity | Usually little to no visible whitening; possible small material-dependent changes | High to very high | Surface cleaning or polishing; replace only if mismatch remains |
| Composite Resin | More stain-prone than ceramics | Limited or variable response; may improve somewhat if externally stained, but does not whiten like enamel | Lower than ceramics | Cleaning/polishing first; replacement only if discoloration persists |
Why Crowns and Enamel React Differently to Whitening
Most crowns are made from porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, or similar materials. Because these surfaces are smooth and non-porous, whitening products cannot penetrate them or change their internal colour. In simple terms, the gel can touch the crown, but it cannot change it.
There is also another important point: the shade of a crown is chosen when it is made. Once the crown is fitted, that colour stays fixed. So if you use whitening strips or bleaching trays, your natural teeth may become lighter while the crown stays the same. This is why a front crown can suddenly look darker after whitening, even though it has not actually changed.
In my practice, this is one of the most common reasons patients notice a mismatch. The color of the crown is stable, but the surrounding teeth are not. That is why tooth whitening for crowns is not really about whitening the crown itself. It is about checking whether the issue is stain, surface dullness, or a shade difference between the crown and the natural teeth.
Common Reasons Dental Crowns May Look Stained or Discoloured
In many cases, the crown itself has not “changed colour” deep inside. What patients often see is surface staining, plaque buildup, wear, or a contrast with the nearby teeth.
Coffee, tea, red wine, and dark foods
These can leave surface stains over time, especially if they are part of your daily routine. Curry, soy sauce, and highly acidic drinks can also make a crown look duller.
Plaque and tartar buildup
If brushing and flossing are not consistent, plaque can collect around the crown and gumline. This can make the crown look yellow, dull, or less glossy.
Smoking or tobacco use
Tobacco is one of the most common causes of yellow-brown staining. I often see this on crowns near the front of the mouth, where colour changes are easier to notice.
Aging and everyday wear
Over time, even a well-made crown can lose some of its original shine. Small surface changes from chewing and daily use can make it reflect light differently.
The surrounding teeth have changed shade
Sometimes the crown is not badly stained at all. The natural teeth around it may have become darker or lighter, which makes the crown stand out more.
How to Keep Dental Crowns Looking Bright and Clean? (7 Tips)
I always remind my patients that a crown stays brighter and looks better when it is cared for like a natural tooth.
- The first step is getting the shade right from the start. If a new crown is too light or too dark for the nearby teeth, it will stand out no matter how clean it is.
- It also helps to choose a material that holds its finish well. Some crowns stay looking brighter for longer, especially in visible areas.
- Good daily care makes a real difference. Brush, floss, and rinse every day so plaque does not build up around the crown and gumline.
- After coffee, tea, red wine, or dark foods, rinse your mouth with water. This simple habit can help reduce surface staining.
- Try not to bite ice, hard sweets, caramel, or sticky gum. These can chip, loosen, or wear down a crown over time.
- Do not use your teeth to open packaging or bite nails. It puts extra stress on the crown and can shorten its life.
- If you grind your teeth at night or play contact sports, a guard can help protect your crowns from damage.
What Are Your Options If Your Crown No Longer Matches Your Teeth?
If a crown no longer matches your teeth, the best option depends on why it looks different. Sometimes the crown is still in good condition, and the real change is in the natural teeth around it.
In that situation, I usually recommend a few practical options:
- Whiten the natural teeth first, then reassess the colour difference
- professionally clean the area to remove surface buildup
- Replace the crown if the shade mismatch is obvious
If several front teeth are stained, worn, or uneven, it may also help to understand the difference between veneers and crowns before deciding how to improve the smile.
A common example is when someone whitens their natural teeth, and an older front crown suddenly looks darker. The crown did not change, but the surrounding teeth became lighter. In cases like that, the best fix is often to replace old dental crowns after the final tooth shade has settled.
However, timing is critical: I recommend waiting at least 14 days after your final whitening treatment before choosing the shade for your new crown. This ‘stabilization period’ allows the oxygen levels in your enamel to settle and the color to reach its permanent shade, ensuring a perfect, long-term match.
However, a proper check is still crucial to confirm whether the issue is staining, wear, or a true colour mismatch.
When Should You Consider Replacing a Discoloured Dental Crown?
I usually suggest replacement when a crown looks different, and the problem is not just surface stain. If a professional clean does not improve the colour, the crown may simply no longer match your smile.
You may want to replace a discoloured crown when:
- Your natural teeth were whitened, and the old crown now stands out.
- The crown has lost its shine and looks dull even after cleaning.
- There are visible cracks, rough edges, or wear on the surface.
- The margin near the gumline looks dark or no longer blends well.
This comes up often with front teeth. A patient may feel that one tooth always looks “off” in photos, even if the crown is still functional. In that case, replacement is often a better option than chasing crown whitening, because the crown material itself does not bleach like natural enamel.

FAQs
If it looks dull or stained, the first step is a dental check-up to see whether the problem is surface buildup, polishing needs, or a colour mismatch with the nearby teeth. If the crown still looks dark after cleaning, it may need to be replaced.
Crowns do not usually turn yellow in the same way natural teeth do, but they can start to look darker, duller, or stained over time. This may happen because of plaque buildup, smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, or simple wear on the surface.
Sometimes the crown has not changed much, but the natural teeth around it have, which makes the crown look more yellow by comparison.
Yes, in many cases. Surface stains on crowns can often be improved with professional cleaning or polishing, but the best method depends on the crown material. Deep discoloration or shade mismatch may require replacement.
They usually will not make a crown lighter, but they are not always harmless. A 2022 study by Alshali and Alqahtani suggests that high-concentration bleaching agents can alter the microhardness and surface roughness of certain ceramic materials. This may affect the surface appearance of the material and could make it more likely to pick up stains over time. For this reason, I advise against using whitening products on crowns.
