Pain-Free Dentistry: Sedation & General Anaesthesia in Turkey
Dental anxiety is more common than you think, and it can stop people from getting the care they need. At Avangart Dental Clinic Turkey, we offer sedation or general anaesthesia so you can have treatment while you are relaxed or asleep, with a dentist and an anaesthesia specialist team by your side. We work in line with Turkish Ministry of Health requirements and monitor you closely throughout the dental treatment process to keep you safe and comfortable.
This option is ideal for those with needle fear, dental anxiety, or a strong gag reflex. It is also suited to patients with disabilities and for children who cannot stay still for longer procedures. Our goal is to help you feel safe, calm, and supported from start to finish.

Overcoming Dental Anxiety: Is Sedation Right for You?
If dental visits make you tense or afraid, sedation may help you feel more at ease during treatment. Sedation is a type of anaesthesia used in dentistry to support patients with strong anxiety and some physical disabilities, including cerebral palsy. Many patients stay in a half-awake state and can still respond to the dentist when needed.
After the visit, people often remember little or none of the procedure. This can make longer or more difficult treatments feel much easier to handle.
Sedation vs. General Anaesthesia: What is the Difference?
Sedation helps you feel calm and less aware during dental treatment, but you usually stay in a half-awake state. You can often respond to the dentist if needed, and many patients remember little or nothing afterward. Local anaesthesia is still used, so the tooth area stays numb.
General anaesthesia is different because you are fully asleep and you do not respond during the procedure. An anaesthesia specialist monitors you closely, and you rest afterward while the effects wear off. This option is often chosen for complex care or when cooperation is very difficult.
Our Sedation Methods: Tailored to Your Comfort
1. Inhalation Sedation (Nitrous Oxide): "Laughing Gas" for mild anxiety.
Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide is a gentle option for people who have mild dental anxiety. You breathe it in through a small mask while we work, and it relaxes your body, making the appointment easier. This is the same type of gas used in labour care.
You stay awake during treatment and can still talk to us if you need to. Compared with deeper sedation, you are more aware of what is happening around you, but you usually feel calmer and less worried. When we are done, the effects fade quickly, and most people feel back to normal shortly after.
2. Oral Sedation: Needle-free relaxation (perfect for those afraid of IVs).
Oral sedation is a good choice if you want to stay away from needles and still feel deeply relaxed during dental care. You take a prescribed sedative tablet before we begin, and then we give it time to start working. Because it can take about 40 minutes to one hour to take effect, we ask you to arrive around one hour earlier than your usual appointment time.
With oral sedation, you stay conscious, but you often feel drowsy and less aware of what is happening in the room. Many patients find the experience easier and remember very little afterward. Unlike IV sedation, the effects of a tablet cannot be adjusted in the same way once it has been taken.
3. Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Deep relaxation monitored by an anaesthetist.
IV sedation is a deeper relaxation option that is given through a small cannula placed in a vein. The sedative medicine works within seconds, so you can feel calm very quickly, even if you arrive feeling nervous. You remain conscious, but you are usually not fully aware of what is happening around you during the procedure.
An anaesthetist monitors you throughout treatment and can adjust the sedation level as needed. If it is necessary, the sedation can be stopped with other medicines, and the effects usually fade within a few minutes. Even so, you still need careful monitoring afterward, so we take you to a recovery area to rest for a couple of hours before you leave.
4. General Anaesthesia: For complex oral surgery or total dental phobia.
General anaesthesia allows you to sleep through your dental treatment from beginning to end. You do not see or feel what is going on, and you will be unable to respond throughout the procedure. This option is often chosen for complex oral surgery, longer treatments, or for people with severe dental phobias who cannot manage care while awake.
An anaesthesia specialist stays with you the whole time and monitors your vital signs closely. When the treatment is complete, you rest in a recovery area while the anaesthesia wears off. Before you leave, we ensure that you are stable and provide clear aftercare instructions for the remainder of the day.
International Safety Standards & Our Expert Anaesthesiology Team
At Avangart Dental Clinic, patient safety comes first. Your care is planned and supervised by our dentists, including Dr. Emrah Yeşilyurt, our Medical Director, and Dr. Egemen Aras, our implant surgery expert who works with global dental implant brands when planning implant-supported restorations.
Sedation is delivered and monitored by our doctors and an anaesthesiology specialist, Dr. [Anaesthesiologist Name]. We work together throughout the procedure, so you feel comfortable and supported from start to finish.
The "Pain-Free" Process: What to Expect
Sedation can help you relax, but it will not numb your tooth on its own. To make the treatment painless, we use local anaesthesia to block sensation in the area being worked on. Sedation relaxes you, while local anaesthesia relieves pain.
When the sedation begins to work, our dentist gently applies local anaesthesia to the tooth or gum. This allows you to remain comfortable during the procedure while also relaxing your body throughout the visit.
Recovery & Aftercare for International Patients
Even under sedation, you can still let your dentist know if something feels painful or uncomfortable. Just let us know if you feel any pain, and we can give you more local anaesthesia to numb the area completely. This keeps you comfortable and lets us keep treating you without any stress.
After the procedure, we talk you through what you may feel as the numbness fades and how to look after your mouth. For international patients, we keep the instructions simple and clear, so you know exactly what to do during your stay in Turkey and after your flight home.
